It's aluminum(?) with a raised shift pattern. It looks stock but all other YJs I've ever seen have this style, with white lettering under a clear plastic cover:
Is it like a rare option that's worth a few bucks maybe?

Is it just that all the black has worn off?

Has the black paint gone away? My old T/A shift knob was all silver because the paint faded.

I've inspected the black knobs up close. The face is different, on the black ones the lettering is white/yellowish, not silver. And the silver face looks nice, there's no reason why they'd make a knob that looks good as-is and then cover it up with paint and a plastic cover.

It's not just paint, there's a clear plastic dome over the black knob.

Rarity and Jeep parts don't typically go together. Is this from an AMC era Jeep?

1990, so it was Chrysler produced but still has the AMC I-6 and Peugeot transmission.

Somehow I missed the YJ part.. Sorry.
If you pry apart the knob in the second pic you'll find the same materials. The white you're seeing is actually silver.

But it looks so nice with the silver face and raised pattern, why would they cover it up in the first place?
